Writing about all the big & little things

Watch out world: He’s cruising!

He's so proud of himself that he's learned how to stand up in his crib...

Josiah has learned how to pull himself to standing–and let me tell you he’s pretty happy about it!  He started experimenting pulling himself up on things this past weekend and by today he’s got it down to an art.  He can pull himself up on in his pack-n-play, toy wall, dining room chairs, entertainment center, crib, you name it!  He’s even figured out how to pull himself up using the piano bench so he can (just barely!) reach the keys.  He’s delighted with the piano and will try to play and dance which usually throws off his balance and makes him fall–it’s quite entertaining.  🙂

It’s also created a bit of a problem when it’s time for him to sleep…  this new found freedom is much more appealing than lying down and going to sleep.  Last night he woke up around 3:00 a.m. and decided it would be more fun to stand in his crib yelling at Chloe.  This didn’t make any of us happy, least of all Chloe!  After 30 min of trying to coax him to go back to sleep I finally let Chloe come and sleep in our closet.  He eventually wore himself out and went back to sleep, but I’m hopeful that he doesn’t do THAT again tonight!

I’m in Wisconsin.

Tonight I drove over to WI for the dress rehearsal of the Requiem.  It actually went quite well–although I apparently have a hard time following the conductor… I tend to want to rush his beat (which Mom said she also did when she first started working with him).  So, now that I’m aware of that, I can be a little more careful and pay more attention to Mom’s part since she’s comfortable with his conducting.  It was really fun to hear the music with the choir and see how all the parts finally fit together.  Plus I just love playing duets with my Mom, so it’s a win win!

I’m off to bed.  But before I go, here are a couple cute pictures…

Guess who learned how to stay standing all by himself? And guess who's SUPER excited about it?

That's right--it's JOSIAH!

Sunny Spring Saturday

Happy at the park!

He just loves being outside... he's a nature boy for sure!

I took this picture (looking down the street from our house) to show how UNBELIEVABLY green the grass is! I can't believe it's only March.

Spring Break is here!

I’m officially on Spring Break now.  Yippie!

Although it’s going to be a very strange “break” because I will still be teaching a couple of times this week and then I’ll be heading over to WI for the Requiem dress rehearsal and performance… so it definitely will not be a boring week!  But the strict routine will be gone for this week at least. And this is Tim’s last week of freedom before starting back to work. I think he’s excited to get back to making money again and I’m pretty sure he’s ready to be done with being a “stay-at-home-dad” for a while too. He’s had to take a lot of the responsibility of watching the kids all by himself during my contest season and I can tell it’s starting to wear on him.  So, even though I dread him going back to work, I’m thankful for how wonderfully helpful he has been.

I’m also dreading how Josiah will handle a nanny.  He’s a bit Jeckle & Hyde lately.  He can be delightfully happy and then 15 min. later angrily yelling for no apparent reason.  He’s also a bit afraid of strangers, so it could be a rough first week getting used to everything…

In other JD news he’s finally an official crawler now.  He was “scootching” for a while and he’s finally figured out how to get his arms to move along with him so he doesn’t always land on his belly.  It’s so cute to watch how much concentration it requires right now.  I’m sure in another month he’ll be so fast I won’t be able to keep track of him!

"Look! I crawled so fast I left my pants behind!"

Super Stressed

I’m sorry I haven’t posted… every time I sit down to write something I think of a million other things I need to do or I start to complain about how stressed out I am.  So, I opt not to write.  No one needs to hear me complaining–except Tim who’s stuck with me!  haha!

So, in an effort to be less “woe is me” and more positive I’ve decided to just post pictures from now until contest is over.  It will be a whole week of “Wordless Wednesday’s!”  Aren’t you excited?  I thought so.  🙂

This was Chloe's creative way to hold JD up while he was playing so he wouldn't tip over. It looks pretty weird, but it's very effective! And look how happy he is!!

(oh, and since you asked Mom, I’ve only managed to fit in one day of good practice since you were here.. not good, I know… but tomorrow is another day!  It looks like I’ll be practicing really hard for the week after contest before you come again… but don’t worry, I’ll get it learned.  ;))

Feeling Crafty: JD’s new sleepsack!

Homemade "Sleepsack"

When we came home from the hospital with Chloe and JD they sent us a sleepsack.  It’s basically a sleeping bag with arm holes.  But it’s a fantastic alternative to trying to put a blanket on a baby (especially a wiggly baby).  This way it keeps him warm but I’m not concerned with it covering his face.  He can wiggle and pound his feet all he wants and when he lays his feet back down the sleepsack goes right with him.

The problem we had was our monster-of-a-boy.  He outgrew his nice hospital sleepsacks very quickly and I could buy them on line in a much bigger size but they were pricey.

So……. I said to myself, “I’m crafty.  I could make that.”  🙂

And I did.

I actually worked on the first one when Kylene and Justin were here over Christmas (that’s how behind I am in writing this post!).  It took me a while to get it figured out (since I’m not, um, let’s say particularly SKILLED in the art of sewing….) but I finally got it to work.  It zips closed, bottom to top, and I even put a little velcro strap across the top of the zipper so it won’t rub his chin.  So fancy, right?

Can you see the protective tab by the neck hole to cover the top of the zipper?

I found the fleece on SUPER clearance just after black Friday so they were about $3-4 a piece.  I’ve now made him 2 of them, so I can always have a clean one available.  And, since I made it myself, I was able to make it extra long so it will last for a while.  At least I hope!

I'm not very good at keeping the zipper from puckering, but it's only for sleeping anyway!

My kiddos in their jammies!

6 Months Old

Josiah had his 6 month check-up this morning.  I can’t believe it’s been SIX months already!  He’s starting to look so “grown up” all of a sudden–it’s so fun!   He is a ray of sunshine and seeing his face light up when he sees me just makes my day.  Those giant chubby cheeks are fantastic.

Here were his specs from this morning (he’s healthy and big–no surprise to any of us! :))

~ Weight:  22 pounds, 7 ounces (98%)

~ Height:  28 1/4 inches (95%)

And, just for fun, here are the things he’s able to do right now:

~ roll from his stomach to his back (and vice versa)

~ grab toys and play with them

~ just about sit on his own (he still flops over once in a while)

~ stand while holding our hands (although when he gets excited he starts to flail about)

~ babble (he seems partial to “ba ba ba”)

~ also he has a grip of STEEL.  🙂  Watch out if you let him get a hold of your hair!
