Writing about all the big & little things

For the greater good

It’s times like now, as I sit here listening to JD cry and cry and cry not wanting to calm down and go to sleep, that I need to remind myself of the greater good.  I know that he has to learn how to cry it out.  I know he has to learn  how fall asleep on his own without being held.  I know his crying isn’t going to hurt him in any way.   And I know this is just a passing phase.

But it’s hard.

My poor little man…

Family Fun

Today we had a Friesen family get together.

Pasty’s brother, Dan, and his daughter (who is heading off to college this Fall) came over from South Dakota for the weekend.  So after they watched Kristen & Jeremy participate in a triathlon this morning they all drove out to see Jen’s new house and then we met up with the Baker’s and Ryan’s family at the lake.  We all had a fabulous time taking turns boating and playing on the beach for a couple of hours this afternoon.  Then we decided for supper it would be fun to come back to our house and have coney island’s–so Tim made a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up food for 17 people and we had a wonderful impromptu family picnic.  We set up a couple tables outside and just sat around eating and laughing and enjoying everyone’s company.  Even though our gatherings are a bit crazy with so many kids running around and so many adults squished into our tiny house socializing, I really enjoy our times together.

And Josiah was a smashing hit with all of his cousins.  Everyone wanted to hold him!  🙂

Our Day…

It’s been a lovely Thursday.  So far we’ve…

  • given JD a much needed bath
  • put on the new outfit from Nana (thank you for the box!!!) to take a picture… at which point he promptly soiled himself through his onesie and outfit (hence the first bullet above)
  • taken a nice long walk to a park
  • had the AC guy come and tune up our air conditioner
  • practiced piano (for the wedding Chloe is in next weekend that I was just asked to play for!)
  • returned emails and made phone calls for the studio
  • actually decided what to make for supper (a rare thing since JD was born!)
  • painted our nails

Big Girl Bed & 2 Weeks Old!

Today we finally got Chloe’s new big bed set up and put in her room.  Tonight will be her first night sleeping in it–Tim is a little worried she’ll roll off the side, but I don’t think so.  Plus it’s so close to the ground she wouldn’t fall very fall anyway.  🙂

So, now that she is done with the crib, I transformed it back into an actual crib again and got it all ready for when JD starts sleeping through the night.  For now he’ll just take naps in the crib during the day (since the monitor is right next to it) and still sleep in the closet, er, I mean the baby’s room…

I can’t believe it’s already been 2 weeks since I had Josiah.  It’s one of those weird time things:  it feels like just yesterday, and yet at the same time it feels like he’s always been here with us.  I can tell he’s growing a ton.  Or at least it feels like a ton to me.  I’m not at all surprised, however, considering the appetite that boy has!  He’s starting to get into a rhythm/schedule during the day but we’re still struggling with his sleeping and awake time during the day.  He just really doesn’t like falling asleep without being held, or without a pacifier, so we’re working on that.   His nights are better–generally he stays asleep and goes back to sleep quickly after his feedings, so that’s great.

He’s such a smiley baby.  I know it’s most likely a reflex or just gas and not really smiling at us, but I choose to believe he actually knows he’s smiling.  It’s just so much more fun that way.  🙂

Goodbye July, Hello August!

Well July seemed to just creep by for the first half and then fly by since Josiah was born.  I can’t believe tomorrow is August already!

I don’t have anything spectacular to report since I wrote a few days ago.  Mostly I’m trying to get back into the “normal” swing of things with two kids.  Some days are easier than others.  It’s amazing how much of how I feel is dependent on the night before…. so if JD doesn’t sleep well at night, the day is so much harder.

Yesterday we helped Jen move into her brand new townhome.  (And by “we” I mean Tim did all the lifting and moving and I arrived later to help unpack boxes…hehe)  It’s so exciting to help her transition to owning her own place.  And the house is super fun and quite spacious–and a tiny bit closer to us!  🙂  It brought back memories of moving into our first house and the endless decisions about where to put things.  Chloe was pretty excited to see her cat, but disappointed that she didn’t want to play…  🙂

Tomorrow is sign-up day!  That means I’ll be up bright and early.  Chloe went to the Baker’s house tonight so she won’t be in the way tomorrow morning which is going to be absolutely wonderful.  Plus she was super happy to see all of her cousins again, so everyone wins!

And finally, before I go… Chloe wanted to say “Thank You!” to Nathan and Amy for her new beautiful dress (see picture below) that she was able to wear for the first time today.  She loves it.

Guess who’s baaaaaaaaaaaack?

Yup, Chloe’s back.

We met my folks in Hudson to pick her up after supper last night.  It sounds like she had a fantastic time–and she talked NON-STOP the whole way home.  It was like her mouth was working independently from her brain and just couldn’t stop.  Tim and I just had to laugh at how she just kept going and going (and going!).

I must admit I was a bit concerned about today.  I was worried that my first day with both kids would be awful.  And I wasn’t sure how Chloe would be after being gone for a few days… I fully expected a few meltdowns and conflicts.  But I’m happy to say it’s been great.  Chloe has been so exited to see and help JD as much as possible.  And I’m so much more comfortable with knowing his schedule now that I’m not so stressed about that anymore.  Overall, I’d say a success.

This morning we made a quick run out to David’s Bridal to pick up Chloe’s flower girl dress.  I just have to take the straps up a tiny bit and figure out how to steam it to get the wrinkles out now…  It’s nice to have the dress a couple weeks before the wedding though, so I can work on it leisurely and not feel rushed.  Oh, and Tim took her dress shoe shopping last week and the new shoes look like they’ll match  perfectly. (whew!)  More things crossed off the endless “to do” list. Yippie!

My next big thing is lesson sign-up day this coming Monday.  Chloe is going to spend the night at Bakers house on Sunday to Monday so I can focus on scheduling for the morning.  I’ll send out the email Monday morning at 7:00 and I expect to be  mostly done by 10:00.  It’s a crazy couple of hours, but totally worth it to have my fall schedule figured out and set.  I’m excited!

One Week Old

This morning I took JD to his one week check up.  Everything went smashingly well–the appointment time even worked perfectly in his eating/awake/sleep schedule.  Just after they poked him with his shot it was time for him to sleep anyway, so he cried for 20 seconds and then was pretty much out.  It was awesome.

Here are his stats for today compared to when he was born:

Born…………. Today……………..

9 lbs. 1 oz.        9 lbs. 7 oz.

21 inches          21.5 inches (body)

14.25 inches    14.75 inches (head)

When we left the hospital his weight was down to 8 lbs. 9 oz. so in less than a week he’s gained almost a pound.  See, I told you he was a good eater.  🙂

Today was my first time out of the house since we went to the hospital.  It has been nice to just relax and stay home for so long, but it was also nice to get out into society again.  I’m slowly starting to feel more like myself again.  I’m able to do more things without getting so winded which is nice.  Yesterday I (very slowly as to not overdo it) mowed the lawn.  It was exciting to be able to use my (not-so-new-anymore) lawn mower.  Tim had banished me from using the mower the week after we got it because I was having so many braxton hicks.  It’s funny to me in hindsight, since there was no worry of me going into labor early at all seeing as he came 4 days late.

Speaking of late, did you realize that Chloe and Josiah were both exactly 4 days late?  Weird huh?

And speaking of Chloe… she is having the time of her life at Nana & Bumpa’s house.  We talked to her last night on the phone and it was clear in her voice how much fun she was having.  I’m so glad.  I’m sure by the time she comes back I’ll be shocked at how grown up she seems to me!

And even though I’m starting to miss her, it’s been wonderful to be able to take these few days and enjoy just focusing on JD.  Every day I start to figure out his little mannerisms and quirks more and more.  And he’s starting to sleep a little more soundly in-between his night feedings which is helping both Tim & I sleep better.  And sleep is a very very good thing these days… 🙂

And she’s off…

This afternoon Chloe left for her first big adventure–her first visit to Nana & Bumpa’s house all by herself.  I am sure that she’s going to have a splendid time (and probably won’t want to leave!).  We’ve been talking about this visit coming for weeks and weeks so it’s fun that it’s finally arrived.   That means that the next event in her life is the wedding coming up in August, so I’m sure once she gets back she’ll be asking every day when that is… haha!  It’s an exciting summer for her, that’s for sure!

I am pleased to inform you that last night JD slept in-between all of his feedings very well.   I, on the other hand, didn’t sleep that well… I kept thinking he would wake up at any moment, so I slept really lightly and tossed and turned for most of it.  So, I’m excited to see if he sleeps again tonight as well as last night.  Today he had nice long stretches of awake time, so I’m extremely hopeful!

Tomorrow Tim heads back to work.  We’re both a bit sad about him having to go back–it’s been so wonderful having him home.  But we all knew that life had to return to its (new) normal pace soon enough.

Before I go, here’s my newest favorite picture of JD.  I just adore those little forehead wrinkles!  🙂
