Grapefruit Experiment

I like grapefruit.  But I’ve discovered that I don’t like eating it with a spoon straight from the peel.  It’s too messy for me.  Plus I feel like I’m not really getting all of the fruit out of the skin… what a waste.  So recently I’ve started eating the grapefruit that’s already been peeled and packaged.  It comes in cute little containers the perfect size for a snack.  See?

I was able to buy them on sale for $1 a piece (7 ounces).   But after eating up all of my supply I just couldn’t bring myself to buy them for full price $1.89.  Even the larger bulk package seemed a bit steep: $9.99 (64 ounces).

So as I was walking through Cub the other day I saw that grapefruit (the fruit itself) was on sale.  So, I decided to experiment.

I purchased 5 large grapefruit for $3.85.  I then came home and spent 30 min. painstakingly peeling every section of grapefruit so it was just like the pre-packaged containers I like so much.  And when all was said and done I was only able to use 4 of the 5 I purchased because one was bad…

Here is the result:

I  used a large Sherbet container–not quite filled to the top–which would have been 54 ounces.  So I estimate I got a good 45 – 50 ounces… I really should have weighed it before I ate some today.  Oh, well.

But I was impressed that it was that full after only peeling 4 grapefruit.  And if I subtract off the cost of the bad grapefruit it would be almost exactly $3 for roughly the same amount of grapefruit that I would have had to pay $9.99 for at Cub!  So, even though it was a bit labor intensive, I think 30 min. of work is worth saving $7.  Plus there is the added benefit of eating more fruit throughout my day!  🙂

That sounds like an EXCELLENT idea! How fast do they go bad that way?

i expect they should last a good week or two. I wondered if I should add some water to the slices since the store bought ones come in grapefruit juice (which I expect helps them stay fresher longer) but after a day of sitting in my container they had magically juiced a little so they were covered with juice all on their own. Does that make sense? But I find that I end up having a pretty large serving at a time because they are so yummy so I wouldn’t expect them to last more than a week. 🙂

That does sound really yummy. Except I can’t eat grapefruit when I’m on my cholesterol medicine. Bummer.
