The Secret Garden was my favorite musical growing up. I just adore the music–and all the arrangements–and the characters are so interesting to me. You have a snotty girl, an Irish maid, a rugged gardener, a sickly boy, a depressed father, an overbearing uncle and a mystical outdoorsy boy. Who wouldn’t love that mix of characters?
As a younger girl I would sing along with all the parts fantasizing about being the main girl (the snotty one as it turns out). I had it on cd growing up. Or, I guess it could have been cassette tape now that I think about it… Anyway, over the years, I moved on, went to college and forgot all about it. I don’t know where the music ended up.
But at Christmas Tim bought me a speaker to hook up to my phone so now I can stream music from our Amazon account for free (or any of the cds we purchase or even upload to it). And guess what was on there. Yup. The Secret Garden. So, I’ve spent hours re-listening to it. And I can safely say I don’t dream of being the girl anymore–now I’m the beautiful soprano (dead) wife. 🙂
It’s amazing how much more meaningful music can be at different stages in my life. Certain songs can dig right into the soul of me. In this case it’s the duet the depressed father sings with his, now dead, wife. He’s agonizing about not wanting to live with out her and she patiently reminds him what is left worth living for. It’s beautiful. It makes me cry. Maybe it’s because I’m pregnant… 😉
Is The Secret Garden musical same story as movie by same name? Tim’s grma Helen liked the book by the same name.
I remember listening to that over and over. I love that music, too. I don’t remember her as being snooty so much as poorly brought up and learning, as the story unfolded, how to relate to other people in a kind way. But maybe that was more from the Feature films movie.
Oh, and by the way, I think my favorite musical, as far as just the music goes, is Evita. I absolutely love the music in that one.
Patsy, yes I think the plot line is the same–just with songs added.
Mom, I forgot about that one! I really do love that music too… ah the dilemma! 🙂
