First Day of School (Chloe)

This year was a delightful turn-around from last years first day of school.  There was no clinging or tears at all, just nervous excitement.  It was a bit on the chilly side this morning, which is quite humorous to me seeing as it’s still August… so Chloe had to wear a sweater with her dress.

We were all up early.  Actually a little too early since their green light somehow turned on 30 min. earlier than it was supposed to… but we’ll get that fixed today.  It wasn’t all bad though, because it gave us lots of time to get everything done without having to hurry.    So we had plenty of time to take some pictures then walk down to the bus stop and chat with the neighbors.  Since a family moved this summer and a different kid moved up to another school there are only 3 kids now at our bus stop.

Tim was even able to walk down to the bus stop with us, which made all the kids super happy.  😉

Beach & Open House

Yesterday we made one final trip to the beach with the Bakers.  I didn’t keep an exact count of how many times we ended up going this summer, but I’m pleased that we were able to go a handful of times.  And yesterday was just the perfect weather to be at the beach.  We did have dentist appointments for the kids to take care of first, but it gave them something to look forward to afterwards.   Maddie hasn’t always enjoyed going to the beach, but she actually did quite well, and after a rough 30 min. actually perked up and started laughing and having a grand ol’ time.

In other news, last night was Chloe’s open house at school.  On open house night she gets to bring all of her school supplies to the classroom, meet her teacher, order yearbooks, put money in her food account… etc.  She was so excited and nervous.  We knew that her really good friend (Monica) from last year does not have the same teacher, so she was anxious to see who was in her class.  She did end up knowing quite a few of the kids, although she was quick to point out the boys that were “trouble makers” from last year… which she wasn’t as pleased about.  🙂  By the time we left, though, she exclaimed that she wanted school to start RIGHT NOW!

And as a side note, she wanted to dress up for the open house.  She even wanted fancy hair (it’s hard to see, but it’s a bun with a braid around the edge and a white bow).  At her open house the teacher had a water bottle for every student to take home.  She really liked that.

Paths through the grass

When I was young we lived on a hobby farm with a lot of property.  It was a charming house with some outbuildings and kennel that my parents built.  We had many acres of woods, tons of grassy space near the house and a river running behind our property.   I’m not entirely sure how big the grassy space was exactly, because, let’s face it, kids don’t care about property size.  We really only start to care about those things as we get older and start wanting to buy a house with property…  But it was a lot of grass.

We kids rarely mowed the lawn.  That was something Mom did.  She enjoyed it–or at least that’s what I remember thinking.  There came a point in our lives that we were allowed to learn how to mow that grass and I remember thinking that was so cool.   It was a right of passage into being a teenager or something.  Either way, I thought it was so awesome to be able to mow that lawn.   Which is why, now, as an adult I’m happy to mow our own lawn.   Plus I just love the satisfaction of straight lines and a tidy lawn when I’m done.  It’s so pretty.  And I get the added bonus of getting to do it all over again in a few days!  Oh, and of course, don’t forget the exercise that comes along with it.

But when we were younger and couldn’t mow yet, I vividly recall chasing my Mom or Dad around the back yard as they rode the riding lawn mower.  Each swipe back and forth with the mower would create a new exciting path through the grass that we could chase each other down.  Of course, we had to be careful not to get to close, or you could get in trouble… but that didn’t stop us from running along those magical paths, letting or imaginations run wild.  It was a path to the magical kingdom.  Or a path through a scary jungle with animals lurking on every side.  Or a path that was filled with fish so we had to swim carefully around them.

Today as I mowed the lawn Chloe asked me to make some paths through the grass.  At first I said no.  It would ruin my beautiful straight lines I had been working so hard on.  But then I remembered my childhood paths through the grass and I decided my lines weren’t as important.  So I zigzagged swoopy lines up and down the grass in crazy designs.  And while I finished mowing the grass, slowly eating away at those magical paths as I went, the kids ran and played up and down laughing and running back and forth.  It made me smile.

Happy with their own paths through the grass.

Last day of school!

last day of school R

Today is Chloe’s last day of school.  I feel like we’re one of the last schools to get done this year… which is a huge bummer because we actually start really early this fall (August 22nd), so she’s getting a pretty short summer break.  But any break is a welcomed break, right?  (On a side note, we had a big thunderstorm last night and when she woke up it was still pouring.  She sadly asked me if they were going to postpone the last day of school until tomorrow.  Ha!  I told her they would still have school even if it’s raining.  On our walk to the bus it had finally stopped raining but the thunder was still rumbling overhead.  Josiah thought that was super awesome.)

Her comparison pictures are so interesting to me.  I feel like this was the year that she “grew up.”  But in reality, I probably feel like that every year… hah!

We joked with her yesterday that she doesn’t get summer vacation and that we were going to keep her in school all summer–and without batting an eye she said, “OK!”  She just loves her teacher and learning.  She brought home all of her desk supplies yesterday and I read through some of her work from the year and she has just the nicest handwriting.  See….! (Granted, her spelling needs a little work…)

She also earned an award at school for Artist of the Month.  I’m not exactly sure what that means, but she got a certificate, so that’s fun.

Bathtime Rehab & other random things…

It’s hard to believe by looking at the picture that she needs bathtime rehab.  But what you can’t see is the 10 minutes leading up to getting her to actually sit in the sink… 😉  I’m just delighted that it’s going better.

Only one more day of teaching and then I’m on summer break!  This week has been exceptionally busy just getting ready for the recital and wrapping up loose ends here and there.  Plus I forget that I do everything at a slightly slower pace when I’m pregnant.

Speaking of slower pace, yesterday morning I decided to take a walk to a friends’ house to drop off a few things we had borrowed.  It didn’t seem like very far in my head when I left……… 2 hours and 5 miles later I was regretting my decision.  By the time we rounded on mile 4 my hips hurt so bad I was down to a pathetic saunter.  I forgot that I’m limited when I’m pregnant.  In my defense of it taking 2 hours, we did stop to talk to my friend when we got there AND I let Josiah play at a park near home since he was so tired too.

Chloe only has 5 days of school left.  It’s very exciting!
