Writing about all the big & little things
Today was Chloe’s 1st grade track & field day at school. I’m new to this whole thing, so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. We had gorgeous weather–super sunny and clear, albeit a little on the warm side. Chloe was able to choose three events that she wanted to do. She chose: low hurdles (we’re talking very, very low), hula hoop & fox tail toss. So we watched her compete in her activities (they went in groups of 5, so it took a while to get through each activity) and cheered her on and then did a lot of waiting. Some of the other events included: 100 meter dash, 500 meter dash, hippity hop race, egg and spoon race, 3-legged race, bag race, shoe kick, vortex toss and tug of war. Tim missed the activities, but made it back just in time to give her a hug and see all her bracelets. In lieu of giving ribbons for placing, they earn bracelets in those colors instead. I think it’s a fun idea and Chloe is loving showing off her bracelets.
I was pleased that the air of the event wasn’t very competitive, but rather fun. Chloe didn’t get first place in anything but did get second place in two of her activities–and the best part was that she didn’t care. She was just excited to participate and earn a bracelet no matter what the color.
Maddie was a little tricky since the event went from 9 – 12 and she normally naps from 9 – 11… but she did eventually fall asleep for a little bit in her stroller.
Josiah had fun watching and cheering and hanging out with Grandma Patsy on the side lines. There was even a 100 meter race that they invited all the younger sibling watching to participate in, so Josiah jumped up and took part of that. They all raced (it was adorable) and Josiah won. 🙂 He was pleased to earn his own blue bracelet.
There was also a tug of war contest between all 5 of the classes. It was double elimination so it took a while to whittle down the classes… Chloe’s class, however, was UNDEFEATED! So they got to have a class picture taken (which will be displayed in the bookcase in school) and take the trophy to their classroom. It was a big deal. 😉
I remember the first morning that I walked into this house–it was the day after we signed all the papers. We signed the papers on a weeknight and I couldn’t go back over to see the house as officially ours until I finished teaching that night (after 9:00). I did drive over there and take a small load of stuff that evening, but it was dark by then and really wasn’t until the next morning when I really go the full effect.
I remember when I opened the garage door and walked into the kitchen: it was FULL of sunlight. The sunshiney beams were streaming right in and I stopped and smiled. Then I said to myself, “THIS is my kind of house!”
In our old Holmes street house the windows were small and the walls thick so even though there was light there wasn’t a lot of light. I love sunshine and brightness and cheerful colors. It makes my heart happy.
You know what else makes my heart happy? This little girl. She is also my ray of sunshine. (Like my segway there?)
The other day Chloe was playing outside with Josiah and she was making him twirl her jump rope around in low circles on the ground while she jumped over it each time it came back around to her.
I watched for a little while and then finally went out to tell her that they actually make a toy that does that very thing. AND the bonus part is that you don’t have to make your little brother spin in circles for hours on end. (He was really a trouper for a while, but started to grow tired of it eventually).
So, we hopped online and looked it up.
“Skip-It”
She was amazed.
And right then and there she decided that’s what she wanted to buy with the money she had been saving. So we searched for the cheapest place to buy one (Amazon wins again!) and placed the order.
Even though we have 2 day shipping those 2 days just couldn’t pass quick enough!
It was like Christmas morning when it did finally arrive. She simply LOVES it! She will spend endless hours skipping and hopping and twirling that delightful skip-it. Everyone is happy–she’s getting exercise without even thinking about it.
I never did post anything about Easter. We had a delightfully low key day. We went to church, dyed eggs, had an easter egg hunt, ate a scrumptious meal, watched a movie… it was awesome. I took a few pictures of the easter egg hunt, but they weren’t very exciting. And we agreed that we have a ton of pictures of the kids together (since we just did our photo shoot with Tara recently) so we didn’t even take any Easter family pictures. But I did manage to get a couple pictures of dying eggs. I hope you all had a wonderful Easter too!
We had a delightfully lazy weekend. Well, technically Saturday was more lazy, and then Sunday I kind of had to do all the stuff I put off on Saturday… ha! But it was still a great weekend overall.
On Sunday we had friends from church over and I made a strawberry pie for the first time. I must say I was quite skeptical that I would like it… but it was actually very tasty! And not terribly complicated as far as desserts go–a little bit time consuming because you have to simmer it for 10 min. stirring constantly, but otherwise easy.
In random other news, here’s a picture of a snowflake that Chloe made at school. I think it’s super cool. I’m not sure if you can tell, but it’s 3-D. Just another week or so and I’ll need to take it down since it will seem so out of place as it gets warmer! Well, at least that’s the hope, I guess… 😉
In order to not raise suspicion about doing a photo shoot for announcing the pregnancy to the kids, I made them believe that we were just taking individual pictures of them since they were getting older. And especially since Maddie is now sitting all on her own–I really wanted a picture of her sitting for our photo wall.
So, these are some of the AMAZING pictures we got of the kids (before the real excitement began…). A huge shout out to TGB photography again for her wonderful work.
On Christmas Eve I was talking a bit with Chloe and she brought up Jesus living in her heart again. Tim and I have had many discussions about when a child is ready and wanting to make sure that she truly understands. It’s been tough for me to figure out if she really comprehends sin and everything that goes with it. And it always seems that she brings it up when Tim isn’t around, so I’m left scrambling for the “right” answers. At least that’s what it feels like to me.
But Christmas Eve was different. She was asking more probing questions. So I asked her if she was ready to pray to ask Jesus in her heart and, after a few minutes of consideration, she said she was ready.
Hallelujah!
Seriously. What better gift could I ask for?
