Happy Valentine’s Day 2014!

We’ve already had lots of “Heart!” fun today!  Here’s a picture recap of things we’ve made and done today (and yesterday):

Curly Apples!

For Christmas this year I got an apple peeler/corer/slicer.  Let me tell you, it’s the best thing ever.

This is what it looks like and what it does.

This is what it looks like and what it does.

It makes eating apples fun for the kids.  Okay, let’s be serious, it actually makes eating apples fun for EVERYONE!  Who wouldn’t want to eat an apple that resembles a spring?   We eat a lot of apples these days and it’s so easy to just crank it right out.  We call them Curly apples.

I think the kids might have more fun playing with them than they do eating them….

Sorry, it's a bit washed out--I forgot to change the setting on my camera...

I remember using one when I was growing up (do you still use yours, Mom?) and thinking it was so fun and easy to use.  I’m sure it will become a memory my kids will have too.

Gearing up for Valentine’s Day!

(EDIT:  Whoops I linked the wrong year in my post!  HERE is last year’s Valentine’s Day pictures….)

I admit I’ve had my ups and downs with how I feel about Valentine’s Day.

♥When I was much younger it was all about getting that “one special valentine” from the guy I had a crush on.  (Remember those awesome Valentine’s boxes we got to make to collect our cards in?!?)

♥Then it moved into slightly older where nothing really happened special for me, but those with boyfriends had roses delivered in the classrooms.

♥Then I moved into college and Valentine’s Day became a BIG DEAL.  I was showered with gifts and flowers and let me tell you it was awesome.  🙂

But then life goes by and you get married and suddenly there are other factors in life (a.k.a. budgets, kids, jobs) so it changed again.  I’ve never felt “unloved” or anything but I started to wonder if I would have as much fun with Valentine’s Day as I used to.

And then Chloe got older.  And NOW it’s sooooooo much fun again!  But this time around, not so much for me, but watching how much fun she is having.  I find myself planning activities and foods revolving around “hearts” to make the day special.  Last year was pretty good: ( You can read the post here: 2013 Valentines Day! ) But this year is going to be AWESOME!

So, I’ve started planning and gearing up (keeping in mind we’re still on a budget and I still have to teach that day) to make the day as special as I can.  Here are a few ideas that I’ve found on Pinterest that I really like, but I’m not sure how many of my amazing ideas will actually come to fruition.  🙂

Remember the expression “My eyes are bigger than my mouth”  Yeah… we’ll see what I actually get done.  But the point is that it is going to be fun, because anything can be fun that you put your mind to!

Pete the Cat!

I mentioned in a previous post that Pete the Cat books are Josiah’s new favorites.   We received 3 of them for Christmas from our friends at church and we have all quickly fallen in love with them.  It turns out that they all have a repetitive song in them–so you can see why we love them here!  We are CONSTANTLY singing the songs around the house.

These are the three books we now own:

I think there are a few more books out there and I’m sure we’ll add to our collection over time.

The best part is that you can actually go to the website and download the author reading the books and singing the songs which I think is so cool.  This is our favorite of the three…

The start of our “Family Wall”

This is our unfinished family wall project.  I’m not taking a “real” picture of it for you all to see until it’s more complete.  As you can see, I’m short on pictures from Tim’s side… but that will be remedied shortly.  🙂  It was all  based around the middle decoration, which we both love.  However, we didn’t notice that it was made a bit crooked until I got it home and hung it on the wall and started to look at it more closely… (You’ll be able tot tell when I take the finished picture) but it still doesn’t diminish my appreciation for the wall as a whole.  I’m very excited to be able to hang photos again after months of living in a staged house.

Back to the daily grind.

I’m back to work today.  I just love Christmas vacation, but it’s always over so much faster than I want it to be.  I really shouldn’t complain, because I know most people don’t have the luxury of getting 2 weeks off… of course, when I take off work I don’t make any money at all.  There are no “paid vacation” days in my field.   🙂  So, I’ve enjoyed my days of freedom and I’m ready to jump back in.

In other news, it’s beastly cold.  Very very very cold.  Right now the high is predicted to be -15 here with a wind chill that could come close to -50.  Anything beyond -5 to me is crazy cold.  All of the public schools have been closed for today, but there are a few private schools still thinking they’ll push through.  I don’t know if that’s wise… if ALL of the public schools have been closed, then why not just follow suit, private schools?  Maybe it’s just me.  I just saw that a lot of the schools are going to continue to be closed tomorrow too.

Bring on the hot cocoa and warm blankets!  😉

How about a picture to warm your hearts?

A Quiet(er) Day

Chloe is spending a few days at Nana and Bumpa’s house which means we have a quiet(er) couple of days.  It’s not completely quiet since Josiah is still around and LOVING having sole reign of the house and toys.  🙂  It is quite amusing listening to him talk when Chloe isn’t around.  He talks in a “play” high pitched voice a lot… I’m sure he’s just copying what he hears Chloe do.  And it’s also brought to light some of the basics (colors, numbers, etc) that I need to work with Josiah on–ah, poor second child.  🙂  So, we’ll start working on that.

In other news: We realized that we (okay it was really me) accidentally put the Christmas bins in the very back of the garage when we cleaned out the garage.  That means that in order to take down the Christmas tree, we need to dig out the empty bins first… and it’s REALLY cold out right now… so, um… our decorations might just have to stay up a little longer.

Want a picture before I go?  Well, sure!  I did a “photo shoot” of the kids last week and after over a hundred pictures I ended up with a few cute ones.  🙂  I sure to do love digital cameras!  Here was my favorite picture of just Josiah.

Christmas and other happy things!

Christmas week was busy, wonderful, full and, of course, gone before I knew it!

We started the tradition of opening new jammies and watching a movie on Christmas Eve.  This year we watched Monster’s University and it was so funny.  I loved it!

We hosted the Friesen side gathering on Christmas Day and it was great.  We all enjoyed being able to spread out over the house, watch shows, chat, eat delicious appetizers and laugh a lot.  Here are a few pictures.

Also, I couldn’t find our tripod, which is why our Family picture is a little strange this year.  If you’re been around me in the past week you’ve undoubtedly heard me complain about not being able to find it… but I’m happy to say I found it this morning!  Yippie!  I was so frustrated that I couldn’t find it after cleaning the house and unpacking so many boxes.   Grrr… but I’m happy to have finally found it now!
