Time Out Bottles

Finished! This shows how clear they eventually get once it settles.

I saw this idea on Pinterest and thought it was a fantastic thing to implement with Chloe.  It’s simply a bottle with glitter glue/glitter/water and then the lid glued on.  When she needs to calm down or have a time out she has to take a bottle and shake it up then sit with it on the steps until the glitter settles to the bottom.  She loves it.  And it works very effectively.  🙂

So pretty!

I actually find the bottles quite relaxing myself.  It’s somehow very satisfying to create chaos by shaking it up and then watching it all settle peacefully.  🙂

And you could always create a “special” bottle that has the glitter GLUED to the inside of the bottle for those “longer” time outs. 🙂

Clever idea. How long does it typically take to settle out? Could you use a smaller bottle to make a pretty egg timer?

Sounds like a fabulous idea. I like the fact that you find it calming to watch it, because then you are doing more for whatever the problem is than just making her (or him) sit and continue to be frustrated or angry or whatever.

Nathan, it takes about 6-7 min for the pink one to totally settle and 4-5 min for the purple one. I made the pink one first and added WAY too much glue–so on my first attempt the glitter didn’t hardly move at all! So, after a little tweaking (and dumping some out and adding more water) it’s still a bit long but better than it used to be! 🙂 I’m sure you could make a smaller bottle–the only thing is that you have to look very closely at the bottle to see if everything has settled so it’s not easy to see from a distance.
