I don’t like electric appliances

Yup.  I don’t like them.

I guess I’m an appliance snob.

After having lived most of my life with a gas stove and oven, I find our electric one in this rental house to be quite frustrating.  Now it could also be because this stove only has 3 out of 4 working burners and they all heat differently and 1 is tipped funny and the oven doesn’t heat to the correct temperature……. all due to the fact that it’s ANCIENT.  Oh, and the brand name is…. wait for it…… “Caloric – Prestige Series”

HAHAHA!

Who names their appliance “CALORIC?”

Anyway… I look forward to cooking again in an oven that I can get  used to and depend on again.  I will have to get used to using electric, however, since our next house has that as well.  But it’s a smooth top electric stove, so at least it will be easier to keep clean than these spiral thingys on the top of the one here.

Wow! That is an old stove! I grew up on electric, but after having gas at our house in Winsted and not having it at the rental in Franklin and being back to gas again, I definitely prefer gas.

I wasn’t sure I’d like the smooth top electric, but I do. I haven’t had gas for so long and when we had it, it was not popular, so I always thought I would prefer electric, because everyone else seemed to at that time. All this to say I don’t really care which I have. The gas was hard to keep clean, I remember and the smooth top one definitely comes out ahead on that score. But it is easy to burn lids and things on, because you can’t see that it is hot when it is done being used, but not cooled off yet. I’ve melted a lot of stuff!

Oh, and about “caloric.” That actually is a reference to energy burning I think. That is what a calorie is – energy waiting to be burned. Makes you think before you bake that cake or cookies, though, I’ll bet!

We have a glass-top where we are and I love it! We’re really careful not to keep things on top of the stove unless it’s heat-proof, so the only time we’ve ever had problem with it was when we were cooking with a friend and a hot pad got set on the stove and the wrong burner turned on. Nothing lit on fire! But the hot pad has a lovely scorch mark!

There’s a cleaning solution (Cerema Bryte) that’s *really* good for cleaning them. Our grocery store carries it, so it’s not hard to find. And we’ve never had any problems with uneven heating or anything. I think the oven was pretty new when we moved in, so it’s about 5 years old now. I’m not sure how well it will age, but we’ve loved it so far.

The only concern that I have is we have to be really careful about how we use the cast iron skillet on the surface because it could put scratches into the glass. We tend to just slide pans from off the heated surface to a cool side of the surface, but with the cast iron, we definitely need to pick it up and set it down elsewhere instead of sliding.

But seriously, that stove you’ve got right now is ANCIENT. I mean, who uses an ANALOG CLOCK on anything these days?! 😀
