Parent Volunteering!

Ever since Chloe started school she has begged me to volunteer to come along on a school field trip.  Unfortunately, with my teaching schedule combined with Tim’s work schedule and having Josiah and Maddie, it’s never worked out.  So after 2 1/2 years of asking I was finally able to say YES to help as a parent volunteer in Chloe’s class.  It’s hard to tell in the picture, but she was OVER THE MOON excited.  In fact she’s been counting down the days.  And when I showed up at class today a whole bunch of the kids already knew who I was–which I can only assume was because Chloe had been talking about it.  😉

All of the first grade classes went together to the Old Log Theater to see the play Cinderella.  It was a fun field trip and an extremely well done play.  The only part I wasn’t a huge fan of was the bus ride.  It’s so loud.  I’m not a fan of loud.  But on the way home I was able to entertain the 6 kids around me by making paper finger thingys (yes that’s my technical term).

Chloe at Carina's Party R

Before you read about how sad and unhappy Maddie has been I thought I would make you smile with adorable picture of Chloe from this weekend.  We attended Pajama Birthday Brunch Party and the kids got to wear their jammies.  It was super cute.  (She has donut in her mouth… haha!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maddie has been a bit off for the past couple of days.  I had chalked it up to teething or just having a mild cold or the fact that she had started on solids… but it wasn’t adding up.  Last night she (and in turn Tim and I) slept TERRIBLY.  She would wake up every 30-45 min. crying out in pain.  You should know that she doesn’t normally cry much at all, so this was even more alarming to us.  We were able to get her into the doctor’s office this morning and he discovered her right ear is filled with puss.  Luckily it doesn’t sound like it is a ridiculously bad infection and it’s contained to just one ear.  So she’s on medication now and we’re hoping she’s feeling better soon.  I don’t think she has a very high pain threshold, so the ear infection was making every other “little” annoyance or uncomfortable thing–like gas bubbles–unbearable for her.  Hence the screaming out last night.  At least, that’s what I’m guessing.  With babies it’s always a guess.
I’m glad this is happening now and not on our family trip over Thanksgiving–no one will be fighting to hold her if she screaming!  😉
Piano Song for Nana
Here is a piano song that Chloe wanted to share with Nana.  She’s been working on this one for a few months now and it’s her favorite.  (She especially loves to play it at triple speed as she passes by the piano every now and then…)
A few interesting details about the video:
  • Sorry I shake like crazy as I move positions in the middle.  I thought it would be fun to see her using the pedal…
  • This is before school–the time she has to practice every day–which is why it’s still dark
  • This song is on our piano contest list this year for 7-8 year olds
  • Yes, I make her turn her own page in the middle. Ha!
  • This was the 2nd recording of the video this morning.  The first time she didn’t curve her fingers well enough… 😉
School Picture Day
Can you believe we have school pictures on the 3rd day of school?  Yup.  We must be the first school in the district to have pictures taken.  I actually really like it because all the kids are still wearing their nice “back to school” clothes, so you won’t stand out if you want to dress up for picture day.  Plus all the back to school haircuts are still fresh.  And the first week of school we’re all still very excited about getting ready so it’s not a challenge to take a little extra time for a shower and doing her hair.  See?  It’s a win-win!
This year I went online to order pictures.  There are SO MANY options of backgrounds and styles.  Didn’t there used to be only one option?  Okay, maybe two.  But still… I think I had over 40 background options!  It was a little overwhelming… We’ll see how they turn out.  I’m excited!
She’s a pro…
Chloe came bounding home yesterday with a smile on her face.  All the anxiety and fears from the morning had clearly evaporated away.
Whew!
She even got to see her teacher from last year (Mrs. Connell) and give her a hug.  She said that was nice.  🙂  You should have seen the smile on her face as she recalled it–which tells me it was much more than just “nice.”  I think it was just what she needed.
Josiah has been loving being home alone again.  The first thing he did yesterday after getting home from the bus stop was try on her new sparkly shoes (from her Birthday) and walk proudly around the house.  Then he made a fort and put together a giant puzzle all by himself (twice!).  And at naptime he exclaimed that he liked sleeping by himself in his room.  Ha!
Next Wednesday we start BSF again.  Josiah is so excited to see his teachers again.  In fact he has Mrs. Jeanne again.  She has moved up with his class every year, so she’s literally had him since the very first day Josiah has gone to BSF.  I think he was just 2 months old when he started coming.  He was even a part of her wedding last summer!  I’m going to have to get a picture of the 2 of them together.  He just adores her.
Well, even though our pictures are happy and cute, this is how she really felt…
I’m not sure why, but getting on the bus this morning seemed to be harder on Chloe than last year (for Kindergarten).  She was outright crying as she got on the bus.  I felt bad.  🙁  But I know it’s just nervous energy, and that once she gets to school and starts doing stuff again she’ll like it.  I’m sure there are a lot of kids who are anxious about today.  But it still doesn’t help my feeling terrible as she waved through the window with tears streaming down her face.
Plus she was up twice last night with bad dreams.  We finally let  her sleep on our floor.  This is going to be a tough day for her.
The wonderful thing, though, was that Tim was able to come with us down to the bus stop this morning.  She really liked that.  My girl is so big is so many ways, and yet so little still.  🙂
Happy Golden Birthday Chloe!
Today we celebrated Chloe’s golden birthday!
7 years old.  Crazy!
She got to have Kailynn over last night for a sleepover.  Today we made fancy pancakes (with coolwhip and sprinkles!), I took the girls to the Minion movie this morning (very fun!), we made personal size pizzas for lunch, frosted crazy red and purple cupcakes, played pin the tail on the donkey and enjoyed our last day of summer.  School starts tomorrow so back to the routine!
A trip to the dentist: for the kids
Yeah, I know… I’m the one that really needs to get in to the dentist, but this post is actually about the kids.  I’m not currently in pain, so we’re still figuring out what we can afford.  We did look into and purchased one of the dental plans that Amy mentioned, but it’s taken over a week to finally get a price list of what the plan actually covers and what we’ll need to pay for each service.  It’s only an ok deal.  It does discount the services at roughly 20-25% off EXCEPT for my crown, which is only like a 13% discount…. But, I guess any savings at this point is a good thing.  We’ve been running numbers to make sure we can make up the difference of the cost of the plan before running with this, because there is a 30 day money back guarantee.
But this post was supposed to be about the kids.  Whoops!
As no surprise, we discovered that we have met our (very high!) deductible for our health insurance, so our kids are covered.  I’m not sure why or how they are covered, since we don’t have dental, but I’m really not complaining.  So, I took them back in for cleanings yesterday.  They had a blast.  No, seriously.  You would think I took them to the dental-wonderland-play-place by the way they were so excited to be there and get to pick a toy at the end.  I’m very relieved that they haven’t picked up on any of my dental phobia.  At the end of the appointment we scheduled another appointment for Chloe to get her back 4 molars sealed.  Actually only 3 sealed because one already had a cavity, so we also had to get one filling.  But, again, it’s all covered, so no worries!  She went back in for her appointment today and had gas for the first time.  She was very nervous about what to expect, but it went awesome and she still came away smiling.
So, for now the kids are set for another few months.  Whew!
Kids comparison @ 2 Months
Maddie had a wonderful check-up on Friday.  She’s healthy and growing, but that’s pretty obvious.  We have a very slight bit of eczema to watch and be more careful about putting lotion on, but nothing serious.  She is sleeping a solid 8 hours a night now and is in 3-6 month clothes (but more towards the 6 month size).  The most exciting thing for me, though, is that she doesn’t need a nuk.  She can go to sleep just fine without one but will take a one if she’s hungry too early or just fussy for no reason–so I’m glad we can use it when needed, but that she’s not dependent on them like Josiah was.
(On a side note, the pictures side by side at the top make it look like Maddie doesn’t have any legs… I swear she really does!  I’m guessing the 2 months pictures from the others were taken further into two months… )
Now for the side by side comparison of all three kids at their 2 month appointments:
Weight Height Head
Chloe 14# 5 oz 24.50” 15.5”
Josiah 14# 15 oz 24.75” 16.0”
Madison 14# 7oz 24.75” 15.25”
