The Melting Pot

There is a restaurant named The Melting Pot in the cities.  I had heard of it, but never gone.  As the name implies, it’s a fondue restaurant.  In my mind, I had a hard time imagining how a place could ONLY be fondue and still survive.  Apparently there are many more types of fondue that I had never imagined.  🙂

So, on Sunday night I went out with my friend Stephanie to the Melting Pot.  It was awesome.  The funny part is that she called ahead a few weeks ago and reserved a time for us (“party of two”) and they put us in the back in one of those “romantic” booths with a curtain and everything.  Haha!  I guess when you call ahead for reservations for a party of two they expect it to be for a special occasion!  After taking a selfie and enjoying a good laugh over the situation, I actually loved being in the booth because it was so nice and quiet.  So often in restaurants I get a headache from the noise or I just get overwhelmed.  It was so nice to just be able to chill in our quiet booth.

We ordered a salad and a main dish (in this case she ordered filet mignon and I ordered spinach ravioli and we shared since we both wanted to try some of each) and then you also get to decide what type of substance you want to cook the food in (like oil or broth).  And then at the end you can choose a chocolate (they had like 12 different kinds!) to dip your dessert foods in.  They also had a bunch of different cheeses to try, but we didn’t do that.

Here’s a few of our fun pictures:

Here is our food! In the oil is our fresh veggies cooking already.

You’ll notice in the picture above we have our main dishes (meat and ravioli) and then the square dishes with the spoons are 6 types of dipping sauces.  The 2 round dishes are breading dips that we would dip the meat in before frying.  So.  Yummy.

Yup, you have the fry oil right at your table. When she dropped off our main dishes she told us how long to cook our food in the oil.

Here is our SUPER dark booth. It's not a flattering picture of me, I know, but it makes me laugh!

Here's another picture of the food. You can see that you really do get a lot of ravioli! The flash on her phone REALLY surprised me since it was so bright in our dark booth--hence the deer in headlight look!

And finally our dessert… yummmmmmm….

We decided to try chocolate with crunchy peanut butter. It was amazing. And look at all the yummy foods you get to dip! There was graham cracker crusted marshmallows, brownies, blondies and rice crispy bars...

Pumpkin Party #1

We had delightful weather for our first Pumpkin Party this past weekend.  It was sunny and gorgeous–with just a slight breeze.  I was trying to get all the cleaning and baking done right up until the moment that people arrived, so sadly I wasn’t able to make everything that I had hoped.   But I suppose that’s the good thing about having another party this coming weekend!  Plus I was able to decide what was delicious enough to make AGAIN this weekend.  😉

Want to see pictures?  Ok!  (Oh, and keep in mind, I didn’t make EVERYTHING that you see… hehe!)

Surprise Tuesday visit

We had surprise visitors on Tuesday this week:  The Chilson Family!

chilsons visit to pick up freezer (4)

(yes, those are Xavi’s feet… hehe!)

They came down to pick up a freezer we had in our garage and we were able to spend a couple hours visiting and letting the kids play.  It was so wonderful to see everyone.  I especially enjoyed seeing Baby Sammi since she’s 8 months older than Maddie.  It’s so fun to see what Maddie will be able to do in just a few months (and how much more active she’s going to be… bring out the gates and cupboard locks!).  Sammi thought Maddie was quite interesting lying in the pack-n-play.

I love that we can just have visitors over on a Tuesday morning!  My life is grand!

6 kids and a lot of fun!

Well, we had a wonderful time visiting Shannon yesterday.  And it wasn’t as chaotic as I thought it would be.  Maddie slept most of the time, and Shannon’s little Sam had a 4 hour nap in the afternoon, which meant it was really just like having the 4 kids again.

They have a couple big fruit trees in their yard (pear and apple) so we spent a little time cleaning up a ton of fruit that had been chewed on by a rouge squirrel and tossed half-haphazardly to the ground fallen off.  And since the area was fruit free, Shannon jumped on the opportunity to mow it quick.  That’s true friendship, folks.  Picking up rotten fruit and mowing the lawn.  I love it.  No, seriously, I do love it.  🙂

We filled two bags worth of fruit. That bag is FILLED--It actually ripped as I was carrying it... (sorry the picture it blurry. Chloe took it)

We filled two bags worth of fruit. That bag is FILLED–It actually ripped as I was carrying it… That’s my little toy shovel to help pick up the really rotten fruit.  I’m a bit of a pansy apparently.  I don’t like the feeling of my fingers sinking into soft rotting fruit.  Haha!   (Sorry the picture it blurry. Chloe took it)

Shannon took some amazing pictures while we were there.  She posted them on Facebook too, so you might have already seen them, but they are just too cute not to post again.  I’ll post the complete picture of the 6 kids together later.  That one deserves its own post.  🙂

Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp

A friend of ours at church gave us some rhubarb this week, so I made strawberry rhubarb crisp for the first time.  It turned out really well.  So well, in fact that it’s already gone before I could take a picture of it… 😉  We’re going over to a friends house tomorrow though, and since there was enough rhubarb for another batch that’s what I’m planning on bringing.  I really wanted to make a pie as well, so we’ll see how much I have left over.  She gave me two good sized bundles.

I’m considering planting some things on the side of the garage and I think rhubarb would be one of them.  I’m not sure what else at this point, but I like having rhubarb, and it seems like a hardy plant.

As we were getting ready for school this morning, the kids asked if they could have some blackberries.  I had bought a small container this week since they were on sale and I love them, and there were a few left.  I actually expected Chloe to be turned off by the texture and look of the berries, but nope!  She loved them–and so did Josiah.  (But what’s not to love, right?  Yum!)  Anyway, that led to a conversation about where blackberries come from, and how she thinks they should really be called purple berries, and how they should always be washed before eating them in case some wild animal had come along and licked them.  Haha!  I don’t know where she comes up with some of this stuff!  I then shared the memory that I had as a kid going out in to our woods to pick blackberries and raspberries and how delicious they were.  She was shocked that I would eat them right off the bush.

“What if a deer had licked them?  Weren’t you afraid you would get sick?”

🙂

Nope, that thought never occurred to me.

Suprise Visit: Chilson Kids!

DSC_0033

Last week, Friday, we had a surprise visit from the Chilson kids!  They actually ended up coming on Thursday night so the kids and Shannon could sleep here–she had an early appointment in the cities on Friday– and since I was free I said it was fine to leave the kids with me.  🙂  We had a fun morning.  Xavi helped walk Chloe to the bus stop with me.  He was very excited to see the bus and say “Hello!” to the bus driver.  Then the rest of the morning the kids play and played and played.  It was beautiful outside for the early morning so they ran around outside and played on the playset and drew with chalk and even blew bubbles.  Mid morning we enjoyed a snack and they really wanted to eat it outside on the playset picnic table–which was so adorable–until it started to rain and then they came running back inside.

I discovered I’m really out of practice with babies, though!  I felt really awkward remembering how to hold her and then feed & burp her.  I always feel like I’m going to “break” little babies (which is know is not true, since they are super durable, but it’s a mental thing).  Good think I know that it will all come back to me as soon as I bring our newest one home in a couple of months.  I remember that with Josiah.  It just all comes right back.   Little Sammi was a delightful baby–I just love those chubby cheekers!  She did smile a lot, but I wasn’t able to get her to smile at me when I was holding the camera…

It was a busy morning going from normally only having Josiah home with me to having 4 kids here, but everyone seemed to have a good time.  Plus I got to spend some time chatting with Shannon on Thursday night when I was done teaching, so that was delightful.

It’s crazy to think that in just a couple of months we will both have 3 kids.  That’s SIX kids when we get together!  And I find it so incredibly amusing that after having 6 kids between the two of us, that we have never really overlapped much being pregnant.  There have been slight overlaps, but not really too much.  I think that’s so funny!  I think God knew we would stay better friends if we weren’t both pregnant and emotional at the same time!  😉

Superbowl Fun!

We had a big superbowl party on Sunday–it had a large number of people and a large quantity of food.  🙂

Tim had an idea to make a food stadium.  He found the idea online somewhere and decided it would be fun.  So he did it all from scratch and has been working on it for almost a month, planning and putting the different pieces together.   I admit I was a bit skeptical about the whole thing and I told him if he wanted to do it fine, but that I didn’t really want to help.  Well… that didn’t last for long.  We ended up working on little projects here and there together and, even though I didn’t want to admit it at first, I really did have a good time helping him.

In order to fill this massive unit with food, Tim came up with a “seating chart” of different foods that could go in the sections and each family signed up for what they wanted to bring.  That really helped to relieve the stress (and cost!) of trying to fill it all.  Plus it really helped to build a sense of unity in everyone helping to make it complete.

And, in the end, it turned out awesome!

Want to see pictures?  OK! Here’s the finished stadium just before we dug in!

If you’re curious there are 33 items to eat on the table.  33!  But this doesn’t even count  a variety of items that wouldn’t even fit… I think there were 5 or 6 more things on the counter beside the table.  Did I mention it was a lot of food?  But then again there were 30 people here, so we needed a lot of food… 😉

Now for a barrage of in-process and completed pictures:

Pumpkin Party 2014!

It’s that time again–our annual Pumpkin Party/college reunion!  🙂  It was another gorgeous weekend and the kids came in costume, which is so much fun.  We, one again, gorged ourselves on delicious food and enjoyed wonderful conversation and enjoyed looking at the scrapbook of past years.  It marks 10 years of getting together!

Here are some photos of our fun!

Beautiful Fall Weekend!

Our get-together on Saturday was delightful–but alas, I was having too much fun to actually take many pictures!  Trust me when I say there was: scrumptious food (I even managed to make a few of those pinterest recipes!), grown up guys were down in the yard playing football with the kids over the kids, pumpkin carving, eating deep fat fried foods (we never said this was a healthy party!), a walk down to the fun hay bales and lots of laughter.  It was a fabulous way to sped our Saturday afternoon!
